17. Praatjie oor Orania by die "Libertarian Conference"
Charl Heydenrych het agv van sy besoek aan die dorp 'n praatjie gelewer by die 24 Libertarian konferensie (5 -7 September by "Golden Gate" naby Clarens in die Vrystaat.
Die onderwerp was "Orania - Freedom or Fantacy" - die gevolgtrekking? 'n Positiewe prentjie van selfwerksaamheid in 'n moderne gemeenskap. Die luisteraars was daarmee eens dat hule 'n beeld van verstoktheid en rassime gehad het alvorens hul tot die bewuswording gekom het van 'n groep mense wat eerder na 'n ideaal streef as wat hul probeer wegkom van iets. The linguist Paul Roberge suggests that the earliest 'truly Afrikaans' texts are doggerel verse from 1795 and a dialogue transcribed by a Dutch traveller in 1825. Printed material among the Afrikaners at first used only standard European Dutch. By the mid-19th century, more and more were appearing in Afrikaans, which was very much still regarded as a set of regional dialects.
In 1861, L.H. Meurant published his Zamenspraak tusschen Klaas Waarzegger en Jan Twyfelaar, which is considered by some to be the first authoritative Afrikaans text. Abu Bakr Effendi also compiled his Arabic Afrikaans Islamic instruction book between 1862 and 1869, although this was only published and printed in 1877. The first Afrikaans grammars and dictionaries were published in 1875 by the Genootskap vir Regte Afrikaners ('Society for Real Afrikaners') in Cape Town.
The First and Second Boer Wars further strengthened the position of Afrikaans. The official languages of the Union of South Africa were English and Dutch until Afrikaans was subsumed under Dutch on 5 May 1925.
The main Afrikaans dictionary is the Woordeboek van die Afrikaanse Taal (WAT), which is as yet incomplete due to the scale of the project, but the one-volume dictionary in household use is the Verklarende Handwoordeboek van die Afrikaanse Taal (HAT). 12. 'n Stukkie Afrikaanse geskiedenis: Henning
Sedert die oorname van die Kaap deur die Engelse in 1806, is die gebruik van die Hollandse taal doelbewus en stelselmatig op die agtergrond gedwing. Die voertaal in die Parlement was net Engels — so ook in alle Geregshowe en ander publieke kantore. Die Kiesafdeling van Albert het vanaf 1878 ’n belangrike rol gespeel om gelyke taalregte vir Hollands in die Parlement te verkry. Toe die Burgersdorpers na jare se veg vir die gebruik van hulle taal, oorwinning behaal, het dit outomaties gevolg dat die eerste taalmonument op Burgersdorp opgerig moes word. Ook hier het die Burgersdorp Hennings ’n nederige aandeel in gehad. In teenstelling met ander naburige dorpe waar dit mode en spoggerig was om met Engels geassosieer te word, het Burgersdorp ’n suiwer Boere dorp gebly.
Verskeie Burgersdorpmans het gedurende die Tweede Vryheidsoorlog 1899—1902 as Kaapse Rebelle aan die oorlog deelgeneem. Talle is nooit gevang nie — ’n paar was egter nie so gelukkig nie, onder andere b6.c1.d3.e4. Andries Gerhardus Henning. Die Engelse het hom as ’n “Eersteklas rebel” gebrandmerk. Hy is drie maande in die tronk gesit, waarna hy op £9 000 borgtog vrygelaat is. Verskeie ander se stemreg is hulle vir vyf jaar lank ontneem.
Na die drie jare van worstelstryd teen die magtige Brittanje waar net afgebrande plae oorgebly het, kon talle boere, waaronder verskeie Burgersdorpers hulle net eenvoudig nie versoen met die idee dat hulle Britse onderdane was nie. Kort na die oorlog het ’n gerug in die Vrystaat die rondte begin doen dat Argentinië plase (van melk en heuning) vir Suid-Afrikaanse boere aanbied. ’n Paar boere het in 1903 na Argentinië getrek, waaronder ds LP Vorster, destydse Gereformeerde predikant op Burgerdorp. Hy het inderwaarheid net verkenningswerk gaan doen. By sy terugkeer het hy dan ook talle Burgersdorpers oortuig dat dit die moeite werd was om te trek. Op 12 Oktober 1905 het ’n honderdtal boere van die Burgersdorp en Philipstown distrikte vanaf Burgersdorp vertrek. Onder hulle was bekende families soos Grobler, Coetzer, Olivier, Evenhuys, De Klerk, West, Van der Walt, Van Rensburg, Schlebusch, Venter, Van Wyk, Smit en ’n hele aantal Henning gesinne, onder andere die drie broers b6.c1.d3.e1. Pieter Hendrik, b6.c1.d3.e5 Joseph Jooste en b6.c1.d3.e7 Douw Gerbrand en hulle gesinne, asook b6.c4.d7.e1. Willem Frederik en sy gesin. Die stryd waardeur hierdie mense moes gegaan het voordat hulle finaal besluit het om hulle vaderland te verlaat, word weerspieel in die volgende uittreksel uit b6.c1.d3.e5.f3. As ek so na die groep mense kyk wat 'n mens Afrikaners kan noem, is daar 'n paar groeperinge 1) Die konserwatiewe behoudende Christen groep 2) Die wat nie so konserwatief en behoudend is nie - ja hulle gaan ook nie kerk toe nie. 3) Dan is daar die wat nie eintlik hulself groepeer nie - ek sou se die meeste val maar hier 4) Dan is daar die liberale, moderne, vryerdenkendes wat hulself miskien groepeer - maar defnitief nie saam met groep 1 nie. Sjoe, en dan is daar ook die Afrikaners van gemengde bloed wat in elk van hierdie vier groepe ingedeel kan word! Bou nou 'n nasie met mense soos die! 1. Kom ons gesels oor die toekoms van Afrikaans
Ek voel eintlik nie sterk oor die behoud van Afrikaans nie. Maar ek hou van die taal.
Objektief gesproke - wie is nou werklik gepla oor al die tale wat al in die verlede verdwyn het?
Die enigste mense wat bekommerd is oor 'n taal se wel en wee is mense wat TANS een of ander voordeel trek uit 'n taal - skrywers, digters, liedjieskrywers, koerant en tydskrifeienaars ensomeer. Die gewone mens praat die taal wat hy wil en is eintlik nie gepla oor die "groter" prentjie nie.
